Mary Ann BATES Jefferson was born in Liberty Mississippi on May 12, 1944 to the union of Dorothy Price-Canty and the late Eugene Bates.  Mary Ann was the fourth of five children from this union she attended Marshall high school and graduated from St. Mary’s Adult Education Center, Mary and Mary Arthur Jefferson on August 23, 1965 this blessing union included children Jeffrey Demetrious and Jacqueline Renee.

A faithful and dedicated soldier for Christ, she was a missionary, prayer intercessor and the youth choir counselor at first Baptist Church in Melrose Park Illinois under the leadership of late Pastor Harry McNelty. Mary Ann was ordained a deaconess at Alpha Baptist Church in Maywood Illinois, under the leadership of the late Pastor Rev. Eddie Thompkins where she also served as a trustee assistant.  After her beloved has been retired, Deaconess Jefferson move to Canton Mississippi and 2003 and continued serving the Lord at Fairview Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of  Rev. Marcus Stewart.  She served in the jail ministry as a certified member of the Madison County District along with the mission and Sunday school ministries.

Mary Ann retired from Newell Corporation in Bellwood Illinois after 25 years of service as an assembler.  She enjoyed traveling and cruise ships. Some of her favorite places included South Africa, Bermuda, Hawaii and Belize.  

One of her favorite pastimes was shopping for shoes with her beloved daughter and friend. 

As Grandma Jefferson is was the “best grandma”.   While living in Chicago she was the personal chauffeur to ensure her that her grandchildren had transportation to piano, ballet, swimming and track.  Mary Ann was a member of the Central Mississippi UAW Retired Workers Council.  She also volunteered at the Christian Learning Center in Canton Mississippi, She will always be remembered as a server, giver, and lover of the youth and senior citizens.

Preceding her and death was four siblings: Eddie Lee Bates, Lucille Johnson, Willie J. Bates (Lillie Mae), and Clarence Bates, Mary Ann leaves in God’s care her loving husband of 50 years Arthur; two children Jeffery (wife Agurann) Bates and Jacqueline (husband Kevin) Neal; two granddaughters Jared and Paris Bates.  Her mother Dorothy Bates-Canty, one brother Chris Bates (May Lee) of Kenner, Louisiana: two sisters: Betty Tucker of Maywood, Illinois; Gladys Greer (Willie B.) of Chicago, Illinois a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, god children and friends.
