Family relocated to Brookhaven when she was two years old. We lived on the farm we raise cows we sold milk I would always go take the milk to the route and go pick up the milk can. With my being the third child I babysat most of the time always help preparing the food like shelling of the beans, washing the dishes and did lots of housework, because at the time she was about 10 years old. With the purchase of there new home moved to Ridgeland, Mississippi. In the house in Ridgeland we have three bedrooms kitchen and it outside bathroom we had one large bedroom with a curtain between the beds were separated the boys room from girls room.
After moving to Ridgeland attended Daniel Hand school elementary in Tougaloo for 1 year. The next year transferred to Richmond Grove elementary school from 5th grade to graduation after which she attend Madison Rosenwald High school. Bernice remained an A student throughout High school as a honor student.
We grew up as a large loving family. We had a lot of work to do on the farm such as chopping cotton, walking behind mule to plow 20 acres of cotton and corn. Later, they purchased a tractor, that Bernice’s mom and older brother taught her to drive and operate. The tractor to cultivate and plow the field.
In 1957, after graduating from high school she attended Jackson State University were she education and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Early Education. 1961, while also she attending J.P. Campbell College she studied to be a Secretary and a licensed cosmetologist, she still maintains cosmetology license. Worked on her Masters of Education from National College in Evanston Illinois to improve her education.
In June 5,1962, she married Robert Lee Jefferson who was her high school mate. They married at the courthouse on Wednesday and moved Illinois the next day. Bernice moved with her new husband to East Chicago Heights Illinois 3 bedroom house. After 3 years they sold this house and purchased another in Serena Hills Illinois where their first child was born.
In May 15,1966 Claudette Jefferson was born with the support of your mother and baby brother David. Bernice reflected Claudette was very good and happy baby.
Two years later June 3,1969 Carmalena Jefferson was born that evening not wanting be delivered. After a lengthy labor out come screaming ball of hair.
Bernice was employed by Lincoln School District this job required her to move around a lot she was secretary for superintendent of schools. Her next position, she taught for one year as a second grade teacher and latter transferred to Cottage Grove Elementary School.
In 1966, she worked as a elementary teacher at Lincoln Elementary School for 5 years. Bernice loved to teacher second graders.
Bernice resigned in1971 and moved to Jackson, MS and acquired a job in Flora Elementary school in Flora, MS teaching third grades which turned out that she loved third as well. This assignment lasted for one year and she switched to substitute for another year.
Bernice changed her career in1973 to Inspector of automotive wiring harness at General Motors for 26 years.
The the spring of 1975 they built their present home 133 R.L. Jefferson Rd. Canton MS.
On June 4, 1976, Robert Felix Jefferson the only son born in Flowood, MS. He was a 6 pound 19 inches long and a very handsome baby.
