Dr. Franklin David Jefferson, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Jefferson, was born January 25, 1941 in Madison, Mississippi. Both parents preceded him in death.
ON SAVING HISTORY:
Franklin Jefferson attended Fairview Elementary School in Gluckstadt, Mississippi, which he was in the process of helping to restore; he graduated from Rogers high School in Canton, Mississippi. He earned his B.S. degree in Social Science Education at Jackson State University in 1964. Later, he earned master’s degrees from Antioch College and the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
He was married Celestine Jefferson [Russell] and together they had 3 daughters: Vernessa Shelton, Elizabeth Martin and Dawatha Jefferson and 1 son: Franklin David Jefferson Jr. who died of crib death when was 4 months old.
ON FAMILY:
He began teaching at Jackson State University in 1968. Dr. Jefferson was an associate professor of Social Science Education at Jackson State and served as Registrar for a number of years. He was very active with the Faculty Senate serving on its executive committee 1993-1996, and served as advisor to the Jackson State Chapter of the Student National Education Association. He served also on the Graduate Council and as vice president of the Jackson State University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors. In 1981, he was selected and honored as “Teacher of the Year,’ the Anna W. Wilson’s Award.
ON EDUCATION:
Franklin loved to travel both in this country and abroad. He joined the Peace Corps in 1964, where he was stationed at the Government Technical School in Onihe-West Cameroon Africa. He and wife frequently traveled to various spots to learn about the history of this country. In 1993, he led a group of Mississippi school teachers to study in the country of Guyana. He loved to watch his one soap “Day of our Lives”. He was a very frugal man and didn’t like to waste anything. He loved riding his bike for exercise. But most of all he loved to study history and read everything. When he had time would enjoy read Time Magazine.
ON CHURCH:
Franklin deeply loved his Church, Fairview M. B. Church, Gluckstadt, Mississippi. He grew up in the Church and baptized in 1947. At a Fairview, he served on the Trustee Board and as a Sunday school teacher. His pastor, Reverend Marcus Stewart stated, “Franklin will not be missed, his is missed already.”
